modi: PM Modi, Europe Commission head to talk Ukraine | India News

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi‘s upcoming engagements with European leaders will include a meeting next week with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyenwho will be in India April 24-25 as chief guest for the Raisina Dialogue.
Von Der Leyen will address the inaugural session of the Dialogue and is expected to focus on the situation in Ukraine in her engagements here. Modi will host UK PM Boris Johnson this week and is also expected to travel to Germany in early May for the bilateral summit. This will likely be followed by the India-Nordic summit for which Modi is expected to travel to Denmark.
EU said in a statement that Russia’s war against Ukraine will also feature in her discussions, apart from security and defense cooperation, Indo-Pacific and free trade and investment protection agreement. India and EU are hoping to restart negotiations for FTA in June this year.
EU has just announced another round of sanctions on Russia with the European Commission chief also calling for more supply of weapons to Ukraine in the war against Russia. She is expected to brief Modi on efforts by EU countries to cut their reliance on Russian gas and oil. In the absence of any embargo on energy imports from Russia, Europe continues to pay billions of Euros to Moscow as payment for the energy purchase.
India and the European Union share a vibrant strategic partnership.
