doe: Delhi: School fee hike only after DoE nod | India News

NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Education ,DoE) has barred private schools on government land from hiking fees without its clearance. There are over 400 such schools in Delhi.
The DoE has also directed all institutes looking to hike fees for the 2022-23 session to submit a proposal to it first.
A circular issued by DoE director Himanshu Gupta stated, “All pending fee hike proposals submitted by private unaided recognized schools running on land allotted by DDA or other land-owning agencies for the 2020-21 session have become infructuous… such schools can seek prior approval from the director before any increase and may submit their fee hike proposals.”
When the pandemic started in 2020, schools were prohibited from charging annual and development charges and could only charge tuition fees. Following a petition in Delhi high court in 2021, they were allowed to charge annual and development charges, but with 15% concession.
Between June 12 and June 27, schools can apply for the fee hike proposal. It will have to be submitted online with complete details of financial records.
Another circular issued by DoE’s private school branch stated, “The proposal submitted by the schools shall be scrutinised and examined by the director of education through any officer or team authorized on this behalf. All such schools are strictly directed not to increase any fee until the sanction is conveyed to their proposal. In case no proposal is submitted in response to this order, the school shall not increase its fee for the academic session 2022-23. Any complaint regarding an increase of any fee without such prior approval will be viewed seriously and action shall be taken as per the statutory provisions and directions of the High Court, including a request to DDA for cancellation of the lease deed executed in favor of the defaulter school’s society.”
There are more than 400 private schools built on government land in the city.
